A space designed for young children
In Young Learners, our rooms are named after native birds of Aotearoa New Zealand. The age ranges below are approximate. Transitions are considered in relation to each child's readiness, relationships, development and learning needs, not simply their birthday.
Kia Ora
Tui Room - approximately 0-2 years
The foundations of learning begin with secure relationships, responsive care, communication, movement and exploration. Kaiako provides calm, respectful and unhurried care while supporting tamariki to build trust, curiosity, autonomy and a strong sense of belonging.
Kea Room - approximately 2-3 years
As children's language, mobility and social awareness expand, kaiako supports growing independence, self-help skills, communication, emotional regulation, friendships, curiosity and problem solving. Children are given increasing opportunities to make choices and participate in their learning community.
Pukeko Room - approximately 3-5 years
Older tamariki are supported to deepen communication, social competence, inquiry, problem solving, early literacy and mathematics, responsibility and leadership. Transition-to-school learning is woven through the programme so children can approach their next stage with confidence and a strong identity as learners.
Across the centre, learning is intentionally built upon rather than restarted. Foundations developed in Tui are extended in Kea and deepened further in Pukeko.
